Being a volunteer is an integral part of life as a student at Byron College both in and outside the school community. Our students play an active role in community service projects, fund raising and volunteerism within the Athens area which reinforce collective responsibility and a deeper understanding of modern Greece which for many of the student body is their adoptive or host country.
Academic Year 2023-24
Seven sixth form students enjoyed volunteering to set up, serve and clear up the buffet at the St Paul's Anglican Church Harvest Festival celebration that took place at the Kokotas estate in Stamata. The service and ensuing celebration was attended by many embassy officials as well as members of the local Anglican community. Our student's contribution to making the event a success was greatly appreciated and they enjoyed the experience too!
Doctors of the World
Floods are one of the most common and destructive natural disasters in the world. Every year millions of people are affected by floods, losing their homes, livelihoods and loved ones. Greece has been one of the many countries affected by such extreme floodings which have recently displaced many people in areas such as Trikala, Magnesia, Larissa and Karditsa.
As a school we decided to take action, working with the Doctors of the World Greece, to collect donations that will help support the people in need in these desperate times in the hope that our efforts will help to rebuild their lives and livelihoods. Our donations include toilet paper, betadine, masks, mosquito repellent etc., items most required by those in need of immediate aid.

Byron Eco-Warriors : School Recycling Championship
The Region of Attica in collaboration with the Special Intergrade Association of the Prefecture of Attica (EDSNA) implemented an integrated information and awareness program for the promotion of recycling entitled "Recycling Championship".
The championship is a continuation of the campaign "Give value to your trash" and involved 70 primary schools of the Prefecture of Attica and was implemented under the auspices of the Regional Directorate of Primary Education of Attica.
The aim was to contribute to information about recycling, its benefits and the gradual development of environmental awareness, through good practices to students, teachers and parents.
The league started in November 2022 and ended in June 2023.
Our amazing and enthusiastic Byron Eco Warriors: Jereen Uddin, Lois Mccinnes and Zoi Kalodiki participated in the Recyling Championship closing ceremony held in Pedion tou Areos Park.
They also contributed an upcycled water bottle art installation of a jellyfish made from over 200 water bottles collected by Byron staff and students. Year 6 students wished with this to express their concern on the overuse of plastic and raise awareness of the adverse effects plastic has on sea life.

The Byron College community have so far raised 2.000 Euros for Doctors Without Borders to help towards medical aid in Syria and our first lorry load of donated goods arrived in Turkey a few days after the terrible earthquake struck.
Our appeal continues as this is an ongoing state of emergency with the people of the devastated areas needing long term support.
We would like to inform you that the ‘Recycling Competition’ has started in our school. The competition is conducted by the Region of Attica in cooperation with EDSNA under the auspices of the Regional Directorate of Primary Education of Attica. The aim of this action is for our children to learn to recycle correctly and to strengthen their skills of material management. Throughout the competition, with the active help of the teachers, the children will be informed about the benefits of waste prevention, setting an example for all of us. We invite you to support our school's effort by sorting recyclable materials (paper, plastic and aluminium) from your home and bringing them to our school.
Let's set an example to our children for a clean and green environment.
In November our Sixth Form students, along with our school nurse, helped raise awareness of breast cancer and the importance of mammograms by selling pink ribbons, having a bake sale and a non uniform day. In total they raise over 1,000 euros for Alma Zois.
We continue to encourage students to volunteer within the school in activities such as assisting in the organization and running of conferences and tournaments and reading with younger students.
