2017 Shankar ‘On the Spot’ Painting & Drawing Competition

On Saturday, sixteen Byron College pupils aged 5-15, represented our school at the Shankar 'On-The-Spot' Drawing & Painting Competition, organised by the Indian Embassy and hosted at the American Community Schools of Athens. The theme for this year's competition was 'Nature’s Shadows'.

Well done to all of our pupils for attending and creating their interpretation, and congratulations our Year 3 pupil, Meri Mitinanidi, for her ‘Runner up’ achievement in her category (Age Group 5 – 7).

The Indian Embassy in Athens has been organising this competition since 2005 on the occasion of Children's Day, 14th November, which is also the birthday of Jawaharial Nehru, India's First Prime Minister.

In brief, K. Shankar Pillai (1902-1989) was a famous cartoonist. He brought out a political magazine called 'Shankar's Weekly'. Under the auspices of this magazine, a competition called the Shankar's International Children's Competition was organised in 1949. It invited paintings and writings from children in India. Children sent about 3,000 entries. The following year the competition was thrown open to children from all over the world. Today, the competition has grown and about 1,600,000 entries are received from over 130 countries. The entries are judged by an international jury. The prize winning entries are compiled in a volume called the 'Shankar's Children's Art Number'. For more details please follow the link:
