Debate Tournament at St Catherine’s School

The Byron debate team made a promising start at the first tournament of the season! 152 debaters from twelve large independent schools participated in the tournament. All five Byron teams did us proud. All of our teams competed in four debates.

Our Year 7 pupil, Pollyanna Greene-Wright, and our Year 10 pupil, Noha El Hajj, competed in five debates, including the final.

Pollyanna won first place for ‘Best Novice Speaker’, and 12th place overall out of 152 speakers. Noha won third place for ‘Best Novice Speaker’. Noha and Pollyanna reached the novice final and won second place on a split decision. The girls came 12th overall with 76 teams aged up to 18 years old.

Ellie Papas and Baran Mohammadi achieved 6th place for ‘Best Novice Team’.

Here are the four debate topics:

  • THW fully subsidise gender reassignment for teenagers regardless of parental consent.
  • THBT statues of so called historical heroes who held politically incorrect views should be demolished.
  • THW punish attempted and commited crimes equally.
  • THW require meat packaging to display images that vividly and accurately reflect the experiences of the animals throughout the manufacturing process.

The final motion:

  • THB that governments should incentivise the study of STEM subjects for females at University.

Congratulations to all of our debaters, we are very proud of you.
