Pupil Voice

The Pupil Council is made up of representatives from each year group in Years 5-13 and is chaired by the Sixth Form Head Boy and Head Girl. The Council represents the pupil body, and pupil representatives are elected by each year group at the beginning of the school year. A member of staff supervises/liaises with the Council.

The purpose of the Pupil Council is to provide a forum for pupil opinions and ideas for improving school life and assisting in and initiating School events. It has the following aims:

  • To ensure that all pupils within the School have a voice that is listened to
  • To represent the collective views of their respective year group
  • To organise social and fund-raising events for all pupils
  • To improve the School environment
  • To enable each year group to have their needs and opinions expressed and taken into account by staff and School management
  • To promote School spirit and the values and principles of Byron College
  • To assist in organising social, sports and other events, e.g., fund-raising activities, community service and charity activities
  • To act as positive role models and mentors in the classroom and playground
  • To ensure that every member of the pupil body is treated with the same courtesy and respect
  • To help all pupils feel accepted and fully integrated into all aspects of our School community
  • To provide support and encouragement whenever needed by a member of the pupil body, whether that is personal, social or academic
  • To maintain links with the Parents Association and external organisations

In Pupil Council meetings, issues raised by the pupils are discussed, and then the Head Boy and the Head Girl report to the Head of School. In recent years, the Council, has:

  • Interviewed prospective candidates for the Head of School and Deputy Head of School positions
  • Submitted plans for the redesign of the School playground
  • Raised considerable sums of money for a variety of charities of their choice

The Pupil Council meets on a bi-termly basis.
